Biography
Iko Uwais is an actor who belongs to Indonesia and was born on February 12th, 1983. When he was just of 10, he learnt the unique Indonesian traditional art of Silat from his uncle’s school. After learning this art, he participated in a competition for Silat in 2003 and achieved the third place. However, in the same competition, after two years, he won the first place. He represented his country several times, with his traditional skills, at international levels. He is also a player of soccer and is a member of B-League, a soccer club in Indonesia.
Before becoming an actor, Iko was working as a truck driver. His talent came in sight, when a Welsh movie maker was working on a documentary, which was based on Silat. The director was impressed with Iko and offered him a five year contract, which Iko gladly signed.
As an actor, his first movie was Merantau, which was released in Indonesia in 2009 and received immensely positive feedback. For this very movie, he also won the Best Film Award at the ActionFest 2010. After this, he has received strong roles in another two movies, and these include The Raid and Berandal, which will be releasing in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
